Inside the Factory: 10 Questions Buyers Ask About Eye Patch Manufacturing

This interview is recorded on the production floor, in the same building where the eye patches are mixed, filled, tested and packed. The answers below are unscripted, in the order buyers usually ask them.

Q1. What is the real minimum order quantity?

MOQ starts at 5,000 pcs per SKU. That figure assumes a stock formula and stock packaging. If you want a custom active blend, or a custom pouch with your own print and your own patch shape, the first-batch volume goes up because tool and setup work is being amortised over a smaller run. We would rather quote stage by stage than give you one blended number that hides the difference.

Q2. How long does sampling actually take?

From a confirmed brief, samples normally land within 7 to 15 days. The variation comes from two places: whether the formula needs a new active blend, and whether the shape is a new tool. Plan on a second round. Brands that budget for one extra sampling round almost never slip, because the second round is where texture and wear test feedback get absorbed.

Q3. What certifications should I look for?

ISO 22716 and GMPC are the operating standards for cosmetic manufacturing. If you are shipping to the US, you want FDA facility registration. For third-party verification of what is actually in the batch, ask for SGS test reports covering stability and contaminant screening. A supplier with all four can document all four; a supplier naming only one should be a question for your compliance lead.

Q4. Can you do a custom formula?

Yes. Formula, shape, logo, pouch and box are all customizable. In practice the sequence is: we agree the actives and their percentages against your market's rules, then we scale the bench formula to production and run stability testing. Custom formula is the part of the job that takes the longest, so it should start on day one, not after the artwork is finished.

Q5. What are the material options?

For eye patches, the material decides the feel more than anything else. Hydrogel holds the most essence and gives the cooling effect; bio-cellulose gives a denser, more elastic film that hugs the eye contour; crystal gel and non-woven composites are lighter and cheaper, and are the usual choice for lip masks and broader areas. Net weight is typically around 6 g per pair for a standard eye patch.

Q6. How long is production once we approve everything?

Twenty to twenty-five days on the line, once the formula and the artwork are both frozen. That number assumes the raw materials for your batch are already validated. If a custom active is being sourced for the first time, add the material lead time on top — this is the detail most frequently missing from a buyer's own schedule.

Q7. What documents come with the shipment?

A batch COA, stability data, heavy-metal and microbial screening reports, and the export documentation for the destination. For the EU, the formulation file, CPNP notification route, PPWR packaging data and EPR registration sit with the responsible party — we prepare what the manufacturer provides and flag what your side must file.

Q8. Can you help with registration in my country?

For the markets we ship to regularly, we maintain the manufacturer-side documentation and registration data so that your filings are not blocked waiting on a supplier. What we cannot do is sign a compliance responsibility that legally belongs to your brand. That distinction matters and is worth making early.

Q9. How do I know the samples I received represent the batch I will get?

Ask for samples pulled from the production line, not from a lab pilot. A pilot can let you approve a viscosity or a feel that shifts slightly under full-scale filling. Every production batch is then released against its own COA, which is the mechanism that makes a claim like this verifiable rather than a promise.

Q10. What is the question buyers forget to ask?

What happens in the second year. Reorder lead time, whether the formula can be reproduced exactly after twelve months, whether raw material pricing is protected, and whether the certification scope still covers this product. A first launch is a purchase; a brand is a schedule. The questions that matter are the ones that only matter on the second order.
